In the midst of a recent conversation, a friend joked with me about being on the rebound.
We were talking about my new found happiness and how I didn't seem to shed many tears.
My immediate answer to being on the rebound was a big, fat absolute NO.
But I had to give it more thought.
Some things I let go in one ear and right out the other. Other things I let bounce around for a bit and then let go.
This one was bouncing around like a big ole orange beach ball in my head.
Hmmmm.
What is a rebound relationship?
A rebound relationship is one that occurs shortly after the breakup of a significant love relationship.
Shortly after? Is that a month or 6 months? What is shortly after?
And of course, I did a little reading about a rebound relationship and it says that 4 out of 5 people who remarry within a year after a divorce end up divorced again.
Hmmmm.
One marriage with two dogs and four kids rush into my mind. He divorced and soon remarried one of my good friends. So they beat the odds. Congrats!
But then another part of what I read about a rebound relationship caught my eye. "It is a distraction" and "It is a connection to another person that keeps us from having to experience the full extent of the emotional pain of our recent breakup."
"A distraction" and "keeps from having to experience the full extent of the emotional pain" jump off the computer screen at me.
And I stand toe-to-toe with it.
I keep reading and it said, "fear being alone."
Hmmmmm.
Nah, that’s not me either. But just as I dismissed that ridiculous thought, a true fear revealed itself. Wow!
Yea, I fear that when this life ends that my obituary will read, "She leaves a host of nieces and nephews."
Whew! That's the painful truth.
In fact, it used to be one of the saddest things for me when I wrote obituaries in my first newspaper job.
I remember getting those obits and thinking "Wow, why didn’t she have any children?"
But I have decided that if Mr. Right never comes along that I can adopt, although I never imagined being a single mother.
But back to being on the rebound.
I haven't been divorced a year yet but I believe it was over waaaay before we decided to throw in the towel. And I cried and prayed and cried and prayed and cried and prayed. So I believe I have grieved the loss.
Nevertheless, my mother and my bf's mother have mentioned that I did not let any grass grow under my feet, and I haven’t. And why should I?
I have dealt with my feelings. I have a few regrets. I understand things I could have done differently. I feel like it's time to move on with my life, and ummmm not repeat my same errors and be a bit more discerning about the things I want and things I definitely need from a potential mate.
But how long should a person wait after getting a divorce or relationshp to start dating? How long should a divorcee wait before getting remarried? What do you think is a sign of being on the rebound and have you ever been?
There's also a quiz to take to find out if you are in a postscript relationship. And here's another quiz about to find out if you are on the rebound.
All false to first quiz and this was the result of the second quiz.
"Your score is 5. Congratulations! You're over it!! You've let go, healed your heart and are ready to open up to somebody new."
Theres two scenerios...Divorcee with kids and one that does not have kids. If a divorced person does not have kids that gives them more flexiblity to start dating and considering remarriage. In my opinion if theres kids involved i think u have to be more concentious of the kids and thier feelings about seeing their parent in a new relationship. The potential new spouse also has to feel comfortable with u dealing with the old spouse. once the healing process is over in your mind i dont think u can put a time limit on marriage....u either wont to marry the new person or u dont! its really a joint decision
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, Great points! No kiddies involved for me. It's interesting that you picked up on a time limit for remarrying :)
ReplyDeletei think regardless of how long u wait to remarry the divorce rates are still the same in the country (50%). so it seems like a person should learn from the first marriage and forget the past and move on to the new love. darlene, do u think u can do that?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous,
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I don't quite agree with you on is forgetting the past. Rather, I think one should learn from the past and move on. :)
This is your most open and honest post yet. Finally You have asked yourself are you on the rebound and responded with a loud no. I've read all of your posts and must admit I thought/think your dating was a bit on the excessive side. Almost like you are afraid of being alone, because in our alone times is when the truth comes out. I think there is some merit to what your mother told you. Take some time for yourself minus a man. Have you asked yourself why most of the content on this site is dedicated to "sex", the physical, and not the mental or spiritual aspects of men and women? Good sex, toes, smell, heels, armpit kisses means nothing if the persons character is foul. Think about it. Have you been to counseling? Are you trying to keep yourself so busy with men so that you don't have to think about the fact that you are divorced. The marriage didn't work. It's not about whose fault it is, the fact is it didn't go the way you wanted it to go. Or maybe this site is your therapy. Is it? Someone suggested that I read your blog and give my thoughts. So as a man/woman I would say slow down and smell the roses. If this is supposed to be for a book, put it in the book. Keep readers intrigued. Your exposing too much too soon. Don't you want to keep some stuff private? I would love to hear your thoughts on compassion, understanding, honesty, love, trust, kindness...you know, things that don't require a battery.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous, Thanks for your input. Dating on excessive side. That's very interesting. Opinions are like assholes everyone has one so you are certainly entitled to your opinion. :) You may be surprised at the number of dates I've actually been on. And my blog is about whatever I want it to be and whatever is on my mind that particular day. My blog is also a marketing tool to create a following for my book, so not everything discussed on the blog will be in the book but this is how I find out what people like to read. And I have people who are close to me -- professionally and personnaly -- who advise me about how much to reveal. You really don't know 5 percent about what makes me me. Every Friday is the topic is sex also. Thanks so much for your comments.
ReplyDeleteI admire your honesty and willingness to bare all. I also found a lot of truth in the wisdom imparted by the prior reader, even though it is clear from your response that unsolicited advice is not well taken. I do hope that as you wrote, some of the feedback will bounce around for a while, and the things that may make you a better author and person will be pondered further.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, my book is fiction FYI and I'm not baring all. However, I do post under a real name.
ReplyDeleteUnsolicited advice is well taken but just know that you aren't the only reader I have to consider. The blog has been wildly popular soooo....
Ms. (Cause you def can't be a guy saying that I talk about sex too much,) I do understand if you no longer want to read my blog but I would hate to lose you since you have a strong opinion.
