It's the way a person responds during tough times that speaks volumes about their character.
In my wallet, I carry a card that has several character qualities. A while back, I wrote a story on the various stages of marriages and getting through difficult times in a marriage. I interviewed Susanne Alexander, one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life at the Marriage Transformation, located in Cleveland.
It offers marriage counseling and activities for couples who are in trouble or couples who want the best possible relationship. If it's good, it really can be better :)
She sent me material from the facility and it included this card.
The card, which is business card size, provides tips on how to practice communicating in a positive way. After all, communication is key.
On one side of the card is a list of the character qualities such as acceptance, beauty, caring, cooperation, courage, courtesy, enthusiasm, excellence, faithfulness, forgiveness, helpfulness, loyalty, kindness, patience, sincerity, truthfulness and many more. Get more character qualities at www.marriagetransformation.com and there is also a book on this topic that is wonderful.
The other side of the card has a message that reads, Use Positive Character Quality Language.
The idea is to focus on the positive to get more positive in relationships.
So a person would say Thank you for being....
I appreciate your....
I love how.... you are.
I say all that because at work yesterday, I found out what the guy I'm dating is really made of.
I texted him about a meeting and I told him I thought it was about my job. I hadn't discussed with him too much about what had been going on, so it caught him a bit offguard. Although many layoff situations catch people offguard.
And I'm not really laid off but I have to reapply for a job that I have had for 11 years because of changes to the powers that be.
Any who.
I told him the meeting was at 11:30 and I would call after I got out to let him know what was going on.
"Please do," he said after asking me, "Are you OK?" "Don't try to put up a tough front and you are not OK." And then, "You would tell me if you weren't OK, right?"
"Yes, babe. Yes," I responded.
But then I get off the phone and right before going into the meeting, I get a text.
It read: "Lord, our Heavenly Father, Lord. UR our everything. Even right now Lord. I ask that u order Darlene's steps Lord. U know all about the plans of her employers Lord. We ask for Favor and blessings from U Lord. In Jesus name I pray. Thank God Amen!"
I couldn't believe that I had gotten a praying text. I was stunned. The gesture was tooo sweet. It was tooo kind. I mean really who does that? I felt like I had died and gone to heaven because I've never experienced anything like this before.
And whew, I've prayed for a praying man so this has to be the stuff that good relationships are made of.
I had to tell him:
Thank you for being ...... thankful.
I appreciate your ...... faithfulness.
I love how ..... encouraging ...... you are.
Send a character quality text to your significant other.
Happy Relationship!
